Managed Hosting
Definitions of “Managed Hosting” vary from people to people and company to company however one common theme seems to run throughout and that is that the customer does not want to look after the daily tasks of “housekeeping” that running a Dedicated Server efficiently seems to bring.

Why Managed Hosting?
Nowadays with the increasing requirements for outsourcing and IT systems becoming more distributed and fragmented, the Internet and Hosting has become the only way (at least cost wise) of bringing all these pieces of the Jigsaw puzzle together. Traditionally Systems Integrators have been the drivers for these requirements however in the last 5 years Virtualisation and more recently Cloud Hosting has meant a greater understanding of the flexibility available and also many hosting companies have to a certain degree taken over the role of Systems Integrators in deploying, managing and configuring these platforms for customers to use for an endless solution to business problems or business promotion.
As a result of this the lines sometimes blur in terms of what an IT Department or a Systems Integrator is responsible for and what a Hosting company is responsible for and we therefore want to define at a granular level what Memset® include in our Managed Hosting offerings so that customers are clear what both they and we are responsible for in the equation.
Monitoring
Advanced Port Patrol would make sure that the server was monitored for ping, load, disk space, RAID and specific port monitoring to listen and see that services such as MySQL, SQL Server, PHP and Apache etc were still running as they should be. If any of these services fail then an alert will be sent to an engineer 24/7.
Firewalling
All of your server traffic would be routed through our Gigabit Linux Hardware Firewalls which are failed over. You could just then instruct our technical support team as to what rules you wanted in place and whether you wanted any of these rules to be changed on an ongoing basis.
SPAM and Virus Protection
Depending on the operating system you have with us, it would be our responsibility to install, configure and update any SPAM and Anti-Virus software on the server. For Windows this would include a fully Licensed copy of Sophos Server Anti-Virus.
Backups and Disaster Recovery
Provided is a full backup, restore and disaster recovery service. For Windows based servers this is done with R1Soft which is a commercial piece of software that enables you to take a full system backup and if needed a “bare metal” restore. In terms of Linux based servers we can either take a copy of anything the customer put into a /backup folder or in the case of a Virtual machine take a backup of the whole server image or for a dedicated Linux server common files or directories. In the case of data loss or complete server failure then we would make sure that all relevant files and folders etc were restored.
DNS and Mail Settings
We would manage the setting up and troubleshooting of any DNS or MX records for you. In terms of Mail Servers for Windows we could provide and install HMailServer which is a comprehensive gui based Mail Server and this is open source and free. In terms of Linux there are a variety of different Mail servers that we can install, support and configure for you included within these would be Postfix or for cPanel based servers Exim.
