Memset, the UK's leading virtual machine cloud provider, has today announced it will offer a private cloud service available for the same price as their public cloud service.

Private clouds are typically more expensive than the public cloud, as the cloud infrastructure is being operated solely for an organisation’s own use.  Memset’s approach is to offer an IaaS cloud where the infrastructure (the servers, and optionally the network) is dedicated to one client, such that their virtual machines are not on their own hardware.

“We’re allowing people to have traditional dedicated servers as part of their private cloud infrastructure, all on their own private network. We just make a small £200/month charge for the dedicated infrastructure, but otherwise the price is the same as for our public cloud.” said Kate Craig-Wood, MD of Memset.

Memset are able to deliver their private cloud at a lower cost than others, as they use a combination of Open Source technologies (eg. Xen hypervisor) combined with bespoke software developed over the last eight years to fully manage and integrate their entire infrastructure.

Craig-Wood continued: “We are not paying anyone any license fees, which can rapidly become much more than the hardware itself. Thanks to this and other cost savings afforded by our scale and investment in massive automation, we can provide VMs in a private cloud at much lower cost than customers can achieve themselves. Even our top-end 16GB VMs only cost £199/month or £0.40/hour.”

Memset’s technology is also capable of achieving enterprise levels of resilience and service quality using commodity hardware (like Amazon and Google are believed to), further reducing the costs, and therefore prices.

With management an important element in cloud computing, Memset has integrated easy-to-use provisioning tools that allow the customer to configure each virtual machine in as much detail as they require.

Memset’s private cloud service is UK-based enabling companies to avoid offshore data issues and with clearly defined and established procedures for data migration Memset’s private cloud solution helps companies become more strategically agile whilst watching the bottom line.
