One of our most popular packages is a dedicated Miniserver™ virtual machine with the cPanel/WHM control panel.
The two give you a fully featured Web-host-in-a-box suitable for hosting one or many low-intensity Web sites with associated services such as email. Ideal for Web designers, small Web hosts and SME's who want their own dedicated bit of the Internet.
Some Web sites or applications, perhaps due to their size (such as a photographer's image store), active content (a busy forum), high activity (such as the Private Eye web site or security considerations (such as a corporate mail server), simply should not be on shared resources.
For such applications we recommend either a Miniserver™ virtual machine or an entire fully dedicated server committed to that sole task. Many of our clients start out on a Miniserver™ VM and then scale up to a fully dedicated server as they require, and we are quite happy to assist with that process.
How to specify such a server depends on the exact requirement. If it is going to be database-intensive then it is a good idea to have plenty of RAM, whereas if it is mainly serving raw content it would be better to have a good uplink and fast hard disks. Forum/community sites, on the other hand, often need a lot of CPU resource.
With the advent of ever more personal bandwidth, both in the home with ADSL2 and on the move with broadband-equivalent mobile data links, media streaming is becoming ever more popular. We offer a very flexible range of bandwidth options, from traditional metered bandwidth with a monthly allowance to high-capacity unmetered connections either contented (so you get burstability, but save money by sharing), or fully dedicated connections ranging from 5-100Mbps.
Media and streaming servers generally do not need a great deal of server resource, although if there is a lot of data fast hard disks can be a bonus. If buying dedicated bandwidth in bulk our prices can be as little as £49.00/Mbit/second for high-quality UK-based bandwidth.
Perhaps you need to store a large amount of archive data, perhaps an online video repository, or perhaps have a novel application that requires immense disk storage. Regardless, we can cater to your mass-storage needs with our P2950 servers capable of holding up to 5,000 GigaBytes of data in a resilient RAID5 array.
Some high-end applications, such as a busy e-commerce site or complex online application may simply be too much load for one server to cope with - especially at peak times. In such circumstances we can assist you in designing a custom server cluster to meet your requirements. That might simply be a twinned database server and Web front end, or a large cluster with multiple slaved servers for maximum resilience and scalability.
When specifying such a system, we would normally recommend that any database is hosted on a dual-processor server with plenty of RAM and SCSI-equivalent hard drives. The front-end application servers can normally be of a fairly low (and therefore cheap) specification, and more can be added in as the load increases.
When dealing with more than one front-end machine the incoming traffic needs to be managed, and for that purpose (and to maximise uptime and spread the load) we provide a load-balancing service; Performance Patrol™.
We look after the network and server hardware regardless, but we give you the choice of whether to manage your own server's operating system and software or not. If you want to be hands-on and manage it yourself (saving some money), thats fine, but if you prefer we can fully manage your servers with a complete suit of services, including state of the art firewalling, monitoring, security scanning software patching and trouble-shooting.
If you have a clearer idea of what you might need try building your own custom Miniserver™ VM or dedicated server. However, if you are unsure, have questions, or just want to bounce ideas off someone, please do not hesitate to call or email us for a free consultation.
